November's Featured Artist: Ching Cia Ee

This month's featured artist, Ching Cia Ee, is a student from Malaysia's The One Academy. We were very impressed by the artwork she began posting onto the Community Gallery recently and decided almost immediately to feature her. Her portraits don't simply depict faces, they breathe life into the sketching. We are heartened to see such blossoming talent in the Community. Keep up the good work Cia Ee!

Message from the Artist

I started drawing at the age of 11 along with my sister, who was 10 at the time. We would both draw cartoon characters that we saw on TV. Fast-forward a few years -- I'm 20 now and have abandoned the idea of doing fanart and am currently working on my major in illustration at a local art college, The One Academy. Here, I got the chance to experiment with both traditional and digital media, and my traditional artwork is done in pencils, charcoal, watercolours, acrylics, etc., and my digital artwork is painted in Corel Painter IX using my Wacom Graphire4.

I enjoy drawing using pencils and painting digitally most, and I particularly adore studying and drawing faces. I seek to tell people something, or send out a certain message or feeling, whenever I work on any piece of artwork. To me, art is a form of expression, and it doesn't always have to be beautiful to work. Of course, I sometimes fail to deliver what I wanted to do initially, and I'm still working my way to achieving my dreams.

As an aspiring artist, who hopes to do both commercial and personal work in the future, I have been inspired by artists from various genres. Almost all genres of art interests me, from abstract to macabre to comics and even sculpture (sometimes I feel like wanting to do everything!), but several notable influences are Linda Bergkvist, Kazuhiko Sano, Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, Loh Kin Sun, and David Grove.

This is my first digital portrait. Based on a reference with permission, this painting was fully done in Painter IX using chalk and watercolour. The title of the image should speak for itself - I wanted to capture her alluring stare in this painting - and therefore, the focus on the eyes.

This was done by first applying a layer of gesso using a big coarse brush on an illustration board for the texture or the "flow" of the piece, and then painting on top of that using acrylics. By using both cool and warm colours, I hope to make the viewer feel the breeze of the moment and also the warmth emitting from the figure.

This was done as a college assignment, where we are supposed to draw using colour pencils on a mid-toned colour paper. This is a drawing of Eva Mendes, done on a pink A3 sized paper.

Both pieces entitled "Sketch." are quick pencil drawings done for practice purposes, to capture the feel and the gesture of the figure. Duration for each: under 1 hour.

Another assignment, we are to draw our idol. Gackt isn't exactly my idol, but he's inspired me in many ways. I've always thought of Gackt as this really fake person with thick cakey make-up... until I read his Jihaku (Confessions). You can find the translated version here --> [link] (I must stress that this is not the replacement of the actual book) His life story is fascinating... he's a real hard-worker and perfectionist and thinking about how one can have so much drive to master so many skills, pushes me to try harder as well. Some of his songs are really beautiful too, and so I decided to draw him. This one's done on an A2 textured colour paper and took me quite awhile to finish.

"Pose" is also a drawing done for practice.

This is done using watercolour on watercolour paper. There's a certain kind of freedom in using watercolour and I love its transparent quality/effect and I love how its able to "paint itself". This is one of my favourite mediums to paint with as well. Initially I just wanted to draw something beautiful, and I did many random doodles of butterflies on my layout pad. As I was drawing the final sketch, the message in this piece changed in my mind to something else. I'll leave it up to the viewer's own interpretation.
